How does an air tool motor work?

The soul of all our pneumatic tools is the motor. So for this video we wanted to show you how an air tool motor works.

We used a 6,000 RPM motor for a vertical grinder, specifically the FV-7-1M Vertical Grinder, made by FUJI Air Tools.

We have three vertical grinder models for this 7″ grinding wheel size. Here’s the specs table for comparison.

The difference is the Rotational Frequency, which is simply defined as how fast the grinding wheel will spin, measured in RPM (revolutions per minute).

Depending on the grinding disc you are going to use, it will have a rating of a maximum amount of RPMs. For example, a grinding disc with a rating of 8,000 RPM, should not be uses with a FV-7-4M Vertical Grinder, because this tool will output more than 8,000 RPM. So this hypothetical 8,000 rpm disc would be suitable for models FV-7-1M or FV-7-2M.

How does an Air Tool Motor Work?

There are a few parts involved in the workings of an air tool motor.

  • Rotor Blades (this motor comes with four)
  • Governor
  • Upper and Lower plates
  • Cylinder
  • Bearings
  • Lug Nut

Once assembled, the way it works is that when you turn on the compressor, the rotor spins and the rotor blades come out and they spin to create a powerful flow of air, much like a propeller in a boat.

The power generated rotates the spindle, which then spins whatever grinding disc you attached to the grinder.
