Thread Definition

Coarse Thread (UNC – Unified National Coarse): Threads have a larger pitch (distance between threads), resulting in fewer threads per inch (TPI).

Fine Thread (UNF – Unified National Fine): Threads have a smaller pitch, resulting in more threads per inch.

Advantages of Coarse Threads

Coarse threads have a deeper thread profile, providing greater resistance to stripping under tension. They are less likely to cross-thread and are easier to engage, especially in dirty or damaged environments. Coarse threads perform better in situations where dirt, corrosion, or debris might accumulate. With fewer threads, coarse-threaded bolts are quicker to assemble and disassemble. They distribute load over a larger area, making them ideal for materials like wood, plastic, or softer metals.

Advantages of Fine Threads

Fine threads provide more threads per unit length, allowing for more precise adjustments and better torque control. Fine threads are stronger in tension due to the increased contact area and smaller pitch. The smaller pitch of fine threads provides greater resistance to vibration-induced loosening. Disadvantages of Coarse Threads

Disadvantages of Fine Threads
